THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO INDIA I GOT RIPPED OFF SO BADLY THE FIRST FEW DAYS, I BEGAN TO THINK IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO SURVIVE LONGTERM IN THE COUNTRY. About a month ago (just before my last trip to Japan, I looked into the idea of living permanently on my earnings from Internet earnings? Could I live in India surviving on what I earn now (from Google Adsense)? That is what I asked myself. At the time it seemed slightly out of my reach, but now I am not so sure. I already believe Cambodia and Laos could be within my grasp... India might be too!

There is an American in India, Micah Hanson, who is already living the Vagabondist dream. That is what I want to do, although I don't want to limit myself to the subcontinent.

I could get a flight to Chennai from KL on Air Asia. after my year in Bangkok (or however long it lasts!)

There are return tickets for as low as US$180 from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai.

I could stay at the Suriya International Hotel for just US$24!

If I wanted to live in Chennai for cheaper than that, there are plenty of options. For example, double rooms for 400 Rupees (about US$9!)

And spent a lot of time building up my Indian sites, which will power me to Europe and the next stage of my adventure! This is from India Mike: " I understand perfectly that in a way the cost depends on the lifestyle..but basically, I want to know if you can live a month with around U$ 500 / 600 .."
And mousourik from Kolkata replied: "$500 = Rs.21,000/= $600 = Rs.25,000/= Wow, that's too much! Although I've been to Chennai only once on office tour and that too way back in 1992, but still i can tell u that if u spend that much amount a month, u should be able to stay lavishly. If u use public transport, then half of your estimated budget should do. Let's see what the Chennaians have to say."

phil69 from Berlin reckons 200 Rupees to $20 a day is plenty enough for travelling in India.

On the other hand, siri says: "1. Don't worry much about cost of living, for a decent life style, you need 150-200$ per month, that includes your travel, lodging and food.
"2. Most metros and second rung towns these days have PG (Paying guest) accomodations, for example, in Bangalore, you can get PG from 1500 to upward 5000 INR, some include breakfast and dinner as well. You can always choose not to take food and ask for rebate, most local dailies or (www.admag.com) will post such ads..."

INTERNET AT HOME
Siri goes on to write: "Yes, you can opt for 24 hour uninterrupted ADSL broadband service. That would cost you close to 1000 INR per month for 512 kbps. Also you are required to deposit 'refundable amount' totalling to about 2500-3000 for the equipment along with telephone line (ADSL). Prices may vary depending on the usage, unlimited bandwidth costs more. I'll search and post price plans if I find on internet (I'm sure they would be available). Airtel and Sify are 2 private players with comparable tariffs. Usually service will be activated in 2 days time. For a much cheaper price (half the price) one has to depend on public service provider, BSNL dataOne, that takes roughly about 7 days for activation. Not sure, if foreigners can opt for it.

TRAVELLING IN INDIA
Whatdoido on India Mike claims: " get the impression you can find a hotel in any semi rural or outskirts area in india for 150 rupies per night food will be very cheap but I recomend having atleast 100 rupies aside for food and drink. Bigger cities and nicely packaged food costs more money. also if your eating at restaurants only it might be difficult to find a filling meal at 100 rupies per visit. restaurants charge very high and give very little but sometimes spiced so much that you wont be hungry enough to eat so much anyways.."

MY ONLINE BUDDY SAYS
One good thing about having my empire of Indian sites is, I have built up a network of buddies all over India (and the Indian world), who I can visit when I am travelling. One buddy, Npnithya5, said: "Per day 800Rs.for room only total charge is 50 to 60 thousand."
