s c h i z a n d r a : A general tonic for men. It improves sexual energy. In Chinese it is called "Wu wei tzu" (Five Flavored Fruit) because it is said to contain all five flavors of which are detectible to the tongue -- sweet, sour, salty, bitter & astringent.
Schizandra (Schizandra chinensis) is a creeping vine with small red berries that is native to Northern China. In ancient China, Schizandra was used as a staple food for hunting and gathering tribes. As a traditional medicinal herb, Schizandra, has been used as an astringent for a treatment for dry cough, asthma, night sweats, nocturnal seminal emissions and chronic diarrhea. It is also used as a tonic for the treatment of chronic fatigue.
In China in the days of the Dynasties these berries were highly valued for their ability to preserve a youthful appearance. Schizandra is well known as a sexual tonic and for these reasons alone they were used by the royalty especially the females who prized them for their ability to moisturize and sensitise the genitalia. Schizandra is said to increase the Water Qi in the Kidney. In particular, it is said to vastly increase the "water of the genital organs," referring to the sexual fluids. Schizandra is said to promote the production of semen. It is famous for its ability to relieve sexual fatigue and for increasing the sexual staying-power in men. Schizandra is also said to increase circulation in and sensitivity of the female genitals. Many women claim increased genital warmth and sensation after using Schizandra for a period of time. The Chinese sexual classics claim that continuous use by a woman will increase the amount of "female elixir," a euphemism for vaginal secretions, during intercourse.
Apart from it`s use in increasing sexual stamina, preserving a radiant youthfulness and it`s reputation as a smart drug in recent times, this herb is not only without adverse side effects but actually has a positive cumulative effect.
During the early 1980's Chinese doctors began researching Schizandra as a treatment for hepatitis. Schizandra is now a recognized "adaptogen," capable of increasing the body's resistance to disease and stress. In Asia, this adaptogenic property is said to stimulate immune defenses, balance body function, normalize body systems, boost recovery after surgery, protect against radiation, counteract the effects of sugar, optimize energy in times of stress, increase stamina, protect against motion sickness, normalize blood sugar and blood pressure, reduce high cholesterol, shield against infection, improve the health of the adrenals, energize RNA-DNA molecules to rebuild cells and produces energy comparable to that of a young athlete.
Western herbalists commonly recommend Schizandra for the lungs, liver and kidneys, and to help with depression due to adrenergic exhaustion. In Russia, Schizandra is used to treat eye fatigue and increase acuity.
Schizandra is also known by the names Magnolia Vine, Japanese Gomishi, Korean Omicha, and Fruit Of Five Flavors. The common name Schizandra (sometimes spelled Schisandra) includes the species Schisandra fructus, which is used interchangeably with Schisandra chinensis.

What is the oldest living tree on the planet that been used safely for over 3000 years and was nearly wiped out during the Ice Age everywhere except in China? It is the living fossil tree, grandmother ginkgo biloba! Sometimes surviving today for over 1000 years, ginkgo was the only tree standing after the atomic bomb was detonated at Hiroshima. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dating back to the 15th century, ginkgo was used for lung cough, asthma and diarrhea, and the leaf was used externally for sores, freckles, and perhaps as an antibacterial agent. In present day France and Germany ginkgo is the most frequently prescribed medicine, having appeared in over 400 scientific studies since the 1950.
