TODAY I BOUGHT SOME TABLETS FROM THE 100YEN SHOP WHICH CONTAIN AN EXTRACT FROM TENCHA, A TYPE OF GREEN TEA. Studying the label, I learnt a new Chinese character, 甜, which combines the characters for tongue 舌 and sweet 甘. In Chinese it is pronounced tian and means, predictably enough, "sweet to the tongue".
Some Internet examples:
砂糖大根の別名「甜菜」の甜の徐の意味は「甘い、旨い」であるが、
甜茶(テンチャ)は甘く、甘さには幸せや喜びの印象を伴うところから、
中国では、旧正月(春節)に甜茶を飲む習慣がある。
