Visiting Christiania in Copenhagen was one of the highlights of my life, up there with going to Amsterdam or Koh Phan Gan in Thailand or Dahab in Egypt. In other words, a place where all the rules of the world are reversed, and drugs are imbibed freely and the cutest and the nastiest elements of life paradoxically come together. In this photo, taken outside a shop in one of the back corners of Pusher Street, on the way towards the woodland tranquility of Refshaleveg, I discovered a childlike Utopia: actually, make that a Smurflike Utopia.One of the many smurf houses I saw (once I became stoned enough to appreciate their Smurfness!)
I was lucky to visit Copenhagen in the middle of the hottest summer in 30 years (2003), so I probably saw it at its best. It definitely has a charm of its own, though many travellers were quick to write it off.
